The Journey Less Spoken

Sunday, July 5th, 2009
Beth Roberts asked:

In 2004, I watched the news media declare Bush the projected winner; again. I knew then it was going to be the longest four years of my life. Two years later, on October 18, 2006, I was flipping through the channels on my television and decided to stop and watch the Oprah Show, which was all ready in progress. Since I started watching sometime after the show began, I had no idea who the man was that Oprah was talking with, or what they had been talking about. However, something about this man fascinated me and I began to listen to what he was saying.

I watched this man, a man who was discussing ideas about his vision for a better America. I was very intrigued with his comments about “beneath the surface, we all have the same hopes and dreams and fears and that the human story is universal.”  I also heard him discuss what we needed to instill in our country and in our children was a sense of “are you useful, to others and are you making other people’s lives a little bit better.” Are you Useful? That statement was such a novel idea for me. By the time he said “there’s a wonderful saying that…the most important office in a democracy is the office of citizen;” this man, had my complete attention. I was so captivated by his progressive ideas that a quite unusual thought crossed my mind; “I wish that man would run for President.” I had now idea at the time my wish would set me on a journey less spoken because my support and admiration of this man could cause trouble for me if people were to discover that I was supporting an African-American who may become the President of the United States.

I knew nothing at all about the man I was introduced to for “the very first time” when Oprah was interviewing him about his book. At the time of the interview, I had tuned in too late to know what this man’s name was or the name of the book that I now know was “The Audacity of Hope.” Although I knew nothing about him or his life, I did know one important thing about him; he needed to become “my” President.

Several minutes after I had made my wish for this unknown man to run for President, Oprah spoke up and asked him, “would you run for President?” So, now there were at least two people who wanted him to become President, but one of us had no clue who he was. Although I didn’t know anything about the man, I wondered if he could become President; not because of the color of his skin, but because I was clueless about the political process and if there were any rules and qualifications for a person to become President; other than you had to be a naturally born citizen of the United States.

Time past; and as the months went by, the memory of my introduction to this man faded. So when he announced he would begin a campaign to become the President. I recognized him immediately. I don’t know how I knew it was him, but I knew. I paid close attention and found out his name was Senator Obama. I don’t think I heard his first name; just “Senator Obama.”  There that man stood; at last I knew his last name and I discovered he was a Democratic Senator from Illinois. Not only did I feel something greater than me had heard my wish; but my journey less spoken had begun and I was committed to make my wish come true!

As soon as I heard his announcement on that cold February day, I began my search for a way to become involved in his political campaign. I need to say that prior to Senator Obama’s announcement, I had never participated in any political campaign, nor had I ever volunteered or donated to any political party. I had at least voted, but as an “unaffiliated voter,” I was usually voting for the “lesser of two evils,” not “for” a candidate I actually wanted to be President.

My first involvement with Senator Obama’s campaign was during the Oregon primaries. Now I, a lowly person, scared to talk to strangers, me, did my first ever canvass just prior to the primary elections. It took all the courage I had while sitting in a borrowed car, and I took at least10 minutes convincing myself that I could overcome my fear of talking to strangers for the GREATER GOOD of our Country. The “GREATER GOOD” won out; and I knocked on my first door. I was fortunate that who I spoke with, were kind and respectful, which gave me the courage to knock on that second door.

Since I had my first experience with canvassing, I continued to face my greatest challenge; stepping out of my home, and even more so, talking to complete strangers. I have knocked on hundreds of doors, spoke to over one hundred complete strangers at outdoor community events, and participated in phone banking. Even after having doors slammed in my face and in one instance, being run of a man’s property, I pushed forward with my fear stuck in my back pocket and continued to knock on door after door.

The night of the Primaries I was glued to the TV to see Obama win the state of Oregon, which for one of the first times, our state mattered to the outcome of an Election. Since the Primaries ended, I became a political junky. I started my personal fund-raising on the Obama website, continued to canvass and make phone calls. I continued to be committed to our Democratic Candidate. Even through all of the attacks against him, I saw him stay firmly committed to his vision and message that drew me to him in the first place. I was confident that when Obama was elected, he would begin the healing of our Country, and little did I know at the time, he would become the healer and President of our world.

Soon after the Oregon primaries, we were assigned an area organizer in my small town. We put on an acceptance speech party that turned into a great resource for volunteers. From that time forward, up through Election Day, we were working night and day to get every Obama vote we could in our “red” rural county.

As much as I could, between watching my grandson so that my daughter could attend college, and taking care of my own special needs son, I was volunteering for the Obama campaign. As Election Day got closer, I donated more and more hours at the O-office. Since I have bad asthma, once the weather changed, I had become an office “assistant.” I had already participated in canvassing, phone banking, data entry, and preparing canvas packets, but as our pool of volunteers grew, the area organizer became extremely busy. He was either training new volunteers, or when the focus of contacting people would change he would have to re-train volunteers.

It soon became obvious to me that we needed someone to organize the check-in and check-out process and assist volunteers with their paperwork when they returned. I decided that I would just do it. I saw the need, I knew I had the skills, so it was natural for me to just step up and do it. I went about making the whole process more efficient and organized; at the time, I had no idea how important that organization would become until one night, even with three of us in the office, it had been so busy that even with all my organization, I was close to being overwhelmed. In the seven hours that I was there we had only one fifteen minute lull in one of our busiest nights. I can’t even begin to explain how exhausted I was; yet I didn’t let it deter me from showing up the next day and night to do it all over again.

I also assisted in another endeavor that many of us were asked to participate in. We were asked to start submitting “letters to the editor” and “Op-eds” targeting battleground states. Our efforts started with few volunteers, but rapidly grew into a movement. We had much success pub
lishing in those battleground states and I regained my writing skills that I use to have before I had a brain injury. As a result of participating in this, I was able to publish many articles, a couple of columns, and had some success in posting in some Florida online newspapers. This volunteering work played a huge role in my increased self confidence and gave me more than I can ever express.

One night, after a very long day and after everyone had left; our area organizer set down on the table, one of the many cell phones he was messing with, and put it on speaker. At this point my area organizer just turned and looked at me with this sheepish grin, but didn’t say a word. All of the sudden a man started talking and said that Obama would soon be on the line to speak with us. I think my mouth dropped clear to the floor. I thought to myself “no way.” But within just a few minutes, I heard his voice. As he spoke to the 20,000 listeners around the Country, I could hear in his voice that he was tired. He had just landed and it was about 10pm in the time zone where he was about to give another speech.

There may have been many defining and memorable moments in my life, but, other than the birth of my children and grandchildren, this was one of them. I had not been able to go see him speak when he was in Oregon, but here I was listening to him on a cell phone. His words were supportive of our efforts, and to remind us that we were not to let up with our efforts, not for one minute. Just having the opportunity to hear his voice, filled me with intense joy and it took everything to keep from having tears run down my cheeks. I was on such an emotional high that I didn’t sleep at all that night. Yet, I went right back to the O-office the next day to work another 7 hours.

The evening before the election it was announced that Obama’s grandmother had passed away. I cried, I sobbed, and cried some more. I wanted her to see her grandson become the 44th President of the United States of America, and she lost her battle with cancer just one day to soon. Then that evening I watched a very moving moment, as Obama spoke about her, I saw him wipe away his tears; as he wept, I cried. But what stirred inside of me, was how could anyone not see, he was “of the people,” no different than the rest of us, and had wept, not just in front of a large crowd of people who had come to see him, but in front of every viewer watching him on TV. I knew the answer to my rhetorical question, but I asked myself, had anyone ever, I mean ever, seen a President or someone who would become President, weep in front of millions?

The day and evening of Nov. 4th there were many volunteers helping us so much, taking two or three packets at a time, and would return to tell me their most moving moments, which made every day they had volunteered worth their effort. I was fortunate to hear their stories as I continued to work hard in the office on up to election night and the excitement and buzz was increasing every hour. We still had volunteers on the phone and canvassing, up until 30 minutes prior to Oregon’s polls closing. Once again I was manning the office, only this time, I was honored that the area organizer had trusted me enough to give me that responsibility. However, in accepting that responsibility, I had no idea, what that meant for me on election night.

I am probably one of two billion around the world, which actually missed all the fun leading up to the media projecting that Obama would be our next President of the United States. For Election night, I had been manning the County Democratic Office of all those who were running for positions in my city and county that were already at the Election party, while I was without a television or the Internet. I was unable to leave until someone returned to lock up and relieve me thirty minutes after the polls closed.

It was a long couple of hours for me, with no contact with another human, and without any idea how the election was going. It soon became evident that having the honor of being trusted by the area organizer to “hold down the fort” while he stayed at the elections office to be a “watcher,” would cause me to miss what everyone else, all the volunteers, all of those running for local office were watching at the election party.

In my predicament, I did experience one bit irony that momentarily brightened my night. The phone rang, thinking it was my area organizer, I answered it. However, it was actually a young republican volunteer, doing last minute phone banking. He was as confused as I was about why he called the Country Democratic office to talk to a “republican” about making sure that their “republican” ballot got turned in before the polls closed in fifteen minutes. He really was quite baffled, but I was cordial and said, “I realize that you are just doing your phone banking job, but I don’t think you realized that you have called the County Democratic office,” I heard a awkward laugh from him and I ended the call saying have a good night.  I couldn’t hang up the phone fast enough before I fell on the floor and laughed my head off.

Eventually I was relieved of my duty and arrived at what was left of the Election party, just one minute before our President-elect’s acceptance speech. As I watched, I was astonished at the beauty of all the faces that looked upon this man, as their new great hope. I saw tears of joy not only on women and young ones faces, but on the cheeks of grown men who were openly sobbing; a sight I had not seen before.  Not only was it the grandest moment of the accumulation of nearly two years of my effort, but it was an amazing, historic event that I was thankful I had been given the opportunity to be a part of.

On my drive home, after his historic speech, I had some time to reflect upon my journey less spoken, and how my journey had come full circle. I started my less spoken journey two-years ago not knowing who this great man was, but having an unspoken wish that someday he could be my President; that night, November 4th, 2008, he became everyone’s President; and while on my journey, I was thoroughly introduced to that man I once knew nothing about. I am so grateful that my unspoken wish from two-years ago has now become our 44th President of the United States of America, President Barack Obama.

Bring Personality to Center Stage With Iphone Skins

Friday, July 3rd, 2009
Roberta Groche asked:

One way users can counteract this aspect is through the use of Iphone skins and cases. Each accessory piece allows a user’s personal style of flair and personality to come shining through. With a variety of colors, subjects and design layouts to select from, the sky truly is the limit in this department.

Function

At its best, iphone skins transform the basic black design style into something a little more artistic and flattering. The basic black design may be appealing to many users and there is nothing wrong with that. For others, cell phones are looked at as an extension of personal style. Having a phone with the standard black assembly line design style does nothing to further that individual personality. These accessory pieces come into play and greatly expand the options available to customize the outside of the phone in much the same way that technology customizes the inside contents of the phone.

Concept

Iphone skins are a public declaration of personality. It gives users the chance to take a love for professional and college sports, music, arts and entertainment front and center for the whole world to see.  There are no tools or expert knowledge necessary to bring this accessory piece to an Iphone. All phones are created with the basic template design of a front and back cover along with side covers. A silver or metal material is utilized to create the side covers. It is the front and back covers that utilize the basic black color design.

Here is where many users look to employ customization to their Iphones. The skins enter the picture by providing a variety of options that transform this standard portion of the phone. A quick search of the internet will provide a great deal of companies who specialize in custom designed templates for Iphone cases and skins customization. Once a template design is selected the items are sent to the user.

The installation process is relatively straightforward. It calls for the removal of the basic phone plates on the front and back. These items will then be replaced with the customized items of the user’s selection. For those that does not feel comfortable making the switch, a visit to the cell phone provider works just as well. Once the Iphone skins are in place, there is a customized creation that allows the phone to stand out in the crowd.

Designs

Iphone skins are available in a wide range of designs guaranteed to suite every personality. Designs are as varied as the individual users of Iphones. Everything is available from sports teams, music groups and fashion to military branches and cars. Sports enthusiasts can take the love of the game to a public level by selecting a phone skin in the colors of their favorite team. Add a customized ring tone of the college fight song or team anthem to take fan appreciation to a whole new level.

Social and political causes such as the fight against cancer are important parts of society. Show support for a cause near and dear to the heart with Iphone skins for a cause. Celebrate the joy of the holidays year round with a specialty holiday skin design. Enjoy the elements of nature in the dead of winter with a nature themed skin design. Children and the young-at-heart can take the love of Disney with them wherever they go by putting a Disney themed skin on their Iphone.

For an even more personalize touch, users have the option to create a personal Iphone skin. Select a beloved photo and simply upload that into the skin design program on a retailer website. The end result will be a one-of-a-kind, customized Iphone skin that is unlike anything else on the planet. This feature is also great for business related Iphone skins. Companies can customize employee phones with the company logo or slogan.

Proper Disposal Of Consumer Electronics Is Important

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
MIKE SELVON asked:

When you think about consumer electronics, you may think of equipment you use every day; like televisions, mobile phones and personal computers. What you may not even consider is that each year, the United States alone generates almost 3 million tons of commodity and electronic waste (or e-waste) through the disposal of damaged, defective and obsolete devices, such as that cordless phone that quit working for you or those mobile phones you threw away because you wanted the latest models. Let’s look at where that e-waste ends up after it’s tossed away and the effects it has on you and the environment.

Because of the difficulty and cost of recycling electronics, as well as spotty enforcement of legislation regarding e-waste exports, vast amounts of used electronics have been sent to countries such as China, Kenya and India. Lower environmental standards and working conditions make processing e-waste more profitable yet dangerously hazardous in those countries. Being mindful of e-waste disposal is a big concern. There are facilities out there that specifically deal with this hazardous material correctly.

When electronics are handled and sorted properly, e-waste is a valuable source of secondary raw materials. However, they are a major contributor of toxins and carcinogens when clumsily treated.

Fast paced technology changes, low initial cost and actual planned obsolescence have given way to a growing problem around the globe. Uncontrolled burning, disassembly without safety measures in place, and haphazard disposal practices are causing environmental and health problems.

Toxic and carcinogenic substances in waste from consumer electronics include lead, cadmium, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). When not handled properly, these substances can seep into soil where food is grown. They can be eaten or absorbed by animals in our food chain. Illegal burning of these electronics causes toxic fumes to be emitted, which are inhaled by animals and humans and depletes the ozone.

There are many ways in which these substance cause serious health risks. Lead, cadmium and mercury levels can build up in the body over time causing damage to the central nervous system, renal failure and cell damage. PCBs are known carcinogens.

Think about it the next time you indiscriminately throw away those cordless phone batteries or that camcorder that is older than your parents. Proper disposal through an e-waste recycler helps save our environment. With the potential for mercury, cadmium and lead leaching into the soil and contaminating the food chain, as well as PCB exposure causing cancer, some thoughtful consideration of use, reuse and disposal of consumer electronics is essential.

Report on Carcinogens

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
Lisa Ginger asked:

To help regulate chemicals, the National Toxicology Program issues the annual Report on Carcinogens (abbreviated ROC). This report was ordered by Congress in 1978. By 1978, it was becoming obvious to scientists that both man-made and natural chemicals found in food, drugs and the environment were to blame for many cancers.

The report is put together by scientific experts, who consider all the relevant information about a potential toxin. The information in the report is used by several organizations to regulate potential human carcinogens. A few such organizations include the U.S. Congress, Federal and State agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, private businesses, unions and the general public. As you can imagine, these reports are highly regarded by scientists and government officials alike.

The carcinogens in the report are classified as either “known to be human carcinogens” or as “reasonably anticipated to cause cancer and to which a significant number of Americans are exposed”. The report defines substances “known to be human carcinogens” as compounds directly linked to human cancer. Since actual human studies are not ethical for this determination, scientists rely on human epidemiology and/or studies testing carcinogens on human tissues. If the report refers to a substance as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” that means scientists have seen some evidence in humans and/or enough evidence of carcinogenity in experimental animals.

One of the latest editions of the Report on Carcinogens (9th edition) listed several “commonplace” items. This report listed alcoholic beverages, smoking and chewing tobacco, exposure to second hand tobacco smoke and exhaust from cars fueled by diesel as human carcinogens. In addition, sunlight and the use of sun lamps and sunbeds were also listed as carcinogens. There are several widely used substances under review for future editions of the report (which may already be out). Beryllium and beryllium compounds have been suggested as “known human carcinogens”. These substances are used in cell phones and fiber optics.

Also under review at the time of this writing is a widely used antibiotic called Chloramphenicol. This antibiotic has been commonly prescribed since the 1950’s. A link between Chloramphenicol and leukemia has been thought to be shown in several human and animal cases. Steroidal estrogens are also on the list. These are used to make oral contraceptives (i.e. “The Pill”) and post-menopausal therapy. A virus that is linked to cervical cancer will also most likely be placed on the list. The virus is called human papilloma virus (HPV). About 95% of all women diagnosed with cervical cancer have been found to test positive for HPV.

Are Wi-Fi Hotspots Useful or Environmental Hazards?

Monday, June 29th, 2009
Paul Fitzgerald asked:

What is WiFi? It is possible to form a somewhat informed opinion on the safety or potential risks of this new technology without actually being a physicist yourself. Quite simply, Wi-Fi is the wireless technology most commonly used to connect people to the Internet in schools, coffee shops, hotels and other network locations, or to connect cell phone users to one another. Wi-Fi is certainly convenient for travelers and students, but is it dangerous? Many believe that the low-level electromagnetic waves that radiate from the wireless Internet source to each individual user can be harmful to your health, even causing cellular changes and possibly cancer in some cases.

The area covered by a WiFi Internet connection is known as a “hotspot”; this is the area in which the waves radiate to give users access to the world wide web. It can span several kilometers, although the waves cannot pass through treed areas. While in the hotspot, a laptop user can simply connect to the network, access the Internet, and check their Email or do their other business on the run.

A wireless network uses radio waves to send communications across a two-way network. A computer’s wireless adapter translates the Internet connection data into a radio wave and sends it to the wireless router – the one in your laptop. This process works in reverse as well, sending a radio signal back to the host computer.

Hotspots Useful Stations or Environmental Hazards?

Some report an unusual sensitivity to the waves emitted in these hotspots. Officially, the levels of WiFi electromagnetic radiation emitted into the environment in a hotspot are well below recommended levels and there is no evidence of any risk to humans. Yet some people blame WiFi exposure for everything from sleep disturbances, headaches and blurred vision, to heart and breathing problems.

Because no study has ever shown a conclusive risk to human health from exposure to these low-frequency radio transmissions, many simply shrug off the complaints of these people, choosing to believe their symptoms are coincidental or caused by another source.

So just how high are the levels of radiation in a hotspot? According to Dr. Michael Clark of the HPA, the published research on mobile phones and wireless networks does not indicate a risk to human health. “All the expert reviews done here and abroad indicate that there is unlikely to be a health risk from wireless networks” he says. “The few studies on cellular phone masts that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals claiming to observe health effects are not at all conclusive. The real problem is deciding what level of precaution is appropriate.

“When we have conducted measurements in schools, typical exposures from wifi are around 20 millionths of the international guideline levels of exposure to radiation. As a comparison, a child on a mobile phone receives up to 50% of guideline levels. So a year sitting in a classroom near a wireless network is roughly equivalent to 20 minutes on a mobile. If wi-fi should be taken out of schools, then the mobile phone network should be shut down, too – and FM Radio and TV, as the strength of their signals is similar to that from wi-fi in classrooms.”

Electro Magnetic Fields and the Nature Rythms of the Earth

Saturday, June 27th, 2009
Paul Fitzgerald asked:

The electromagnetic fields are present everywhere. They can be caused by natural means or by artificial methods. The natural methods are those produced by the sun, earth, moon and finally our body. The artificial fields are produced by all electrical appliances and cell phones. Radio communication also tends to increase the electromagnetic field. Apparently mobile phone conforms to both of these. They are a major producer of electromagnetic field and are present very close to humans.

The body has a natural rhythm tuned to that of earth’s electromagnetic field. This can be felt during power failures. The body tends to relax once the source of electricity, around it, is cut off. There is a sense of calmness and serenity in the absence of an electrical appliance. This directly points to the fact that the body is not at ease to the presence of the electrical gadgets. However, life is impossible without electrical appliances. They must be avoided as much as possible in order to protect the health of the body. Similarly, frequent headaches are common to people who are engaged with their cell phones most of the time.

The sun is a constant source of electromagnetic waves. The moon and the space surrounding the earth tend to modify the electromagnetic field of the earth. This causes the field of the earth to be at a constant change throughout the year. The surface and the ionosphere cause the electromagnetic field to bounce from one to another thereby causing pulse of about 0.1 to thirty cycles per second.

The average pulse is that of ten cycles per second and it is referred to as the Rhythm of the Earth. The body has learned to adapt to this invisible electromagnetic field. A very common example is that of female menstruation cycle. It has been found that a particular pineal gland responds in accordance to that of earth’s electromagnetic field. It controls the moods and sleeping habits of the body. The immunity of the body depends on this gland as well. The brain waves are those produced by the brain for communicating with other organs through the nervous system.

Coincidentally, the relaxed brain generates around 10 cycles per second similar to that of our earth. The waves are reduced during sleep and are escalated when under pressure or excitement. The gland secretes a fluid called melatonin which increases the immunity of the body. Any change in this melatonin would cause severe damage to the body in the form of cancers and tumors.

The body is suited to an electromagnetic field of about 30 cycles per second. However, the external disturbance of over 50 cycles would cause discomfort to both the brain and the body. This is capable of causing several diseases over the period. The tests of these electromagnetic fields over lab animals have proved that they are harmful for the brain and blood.

They also affect the normal functioning of the hormones and also cause cancer, tumor and miscarriages. Several researches and tests have concluded that children living near huge source of electromagnetic fields are prone to disease like leukemia and nerve or lymph cancer. Similar cases have been reported in the case of women who have had miscarriages, birth defects and cancers.

The mobile phones produce about a million cycles per second. They are a source of death for sure. The brain damage reported because of cell phones is increasing every day. People accustomed to cell phone suffer from mood variations and stress. The phones directly affect the pineal glands because of the proximity to the brain.

Mobile phones cannot be disposed off entirely because of these harmful effects. However, steps can be taken to prevent these diseases from becoming a regular pattern. The usage of mobile phones should be decreased at any cost. Researches should be made to make an alternative source of communication which would not be this dangerous.

Improve Your Health

Friday, June 26th, 2009
Michael Tomberlin asked:

An ounce of prevention towards wellness -

Learn the simple steps to living a healthier and happier life!

Concern over health and how to improve your health has become a topic more and more of us think about and try to implement in our lives. Advances in medicine have helped us live longer lives and have allowed us to overcome some of the ills and infections that used to kill many people. Vaccines have helped prevent illness and death. They have eliminated diseases like smallpox and have helped against rabies, diphtheria and the plague.

However, we have started to incur a new host of health problems due to the length of our life, the processed foods we eat, the fast paced lives we live and the chemicals that pollute our world. Every day we see new commercials on TV about the next great drug that will make your life better or healthier. But do you actually listen to the list of possible side effects. Are these drugs really helping or just creating different problems. Remember, no pharmaceutical company ever made money by curing you quickly so you could stop taking their pills.

Why wait until you feel poorly before you see a doctor that will only work on alleviating your symptoms and not on fixing the underlying problem. Start achieving wellness and begin improving your health before you get to the point you need to see a doctor. Work on improving your overall wellness.

As the old adage says “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Of the leading causes of death in the United States, many can be prevented. The likelihood of contracting heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues can be directly impacted by the choices we make every day. The choices about what we put into our bodies and the choices we make that affect our personal environment.

Here are some things you can do to increase your wellness and start down the path to improve your health:

Diet and Nutrition – Your diet does a lot in determining your overall health and wellness. What you put into your body does make a difference. “It’s easy to buy into some pretty popular nutrition misconceptions — myths and half-truths that ultimately find us making far fewer healthier food choices than we realize,” says New York University nutritionist Samantha Heller, MS, RD.

Read labels, don’t trust all the advertising and always try to get whole foods and not processed substitutes.

The same goes for your supplements. Get those that are made from natural ingredients and aren’t over processed. Every vitamin and mineral and phytochemical in our body works in concert with one another, and it’s easy to knock that balance off. Be sure the supplements you are taking are balanced and introduced to your body in a way that they are usable and work together as nature intended.

Some of the things you want to make sure you get enough of in your diet are fiber, antioxidants, soy, and water. These things along with a well balanced nutritional intake of whole foods and supplements can go a long way in improving health and increasing wellness.

Weight – Maintaining a healthy weight is critical to improving health. You don’t have to be as thin as a rail – this is actually just as unhealthy as being overweight – you just need to keep the excess in check.

It all begins with attitude. Start by changing how you feel about yourself, your body and your eating habits. Change to a can do attitude where you start to do what’s right for you. Simple moderate exercise, eating a healthy breakfast (no skipping allowed), reducing your calorie intake by not taking just one more are all small things we can do to get in better health by being at a better weight.

Don’t go for the fad diets that don’t work or at best get you to lose weight for a while but then just put it back on later. A slow and steady change will help you lose the weight and keep it off and it will be much healthier for you.

Get plenty of whole foods, protein (quite often a good soy protein can give you what you need without adding fat to your diet) and drink lots of water. Water is critical to the health and wellness of your body. It helps rid you of toxic build up and it is needed for normal cell processes to work. Another side effect of water is that it can make you feel full without adding the calories so you will eat less.

Exercise – Aerobic exercise is very important to maintaining your wellness and improving your health. It has been linked to cancer prevention, reduction of osteoporosis, helping with depression, lowering the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and of course obesity and weight control. It can also help with cognitive functions – meaning you can think more clearly and work more efficiently.

Aerobic exercise makes most of us think of joining a gym or having to run several miles every day. This is just not the case. You can keep it very simple and still achieve benefits. Walking is one of the best exercises out there. It is simple, easy on the joints, doesn’t cost us a lot of money and it can be done pretty much anywhere. To get a benefit from walking, you just need to make sure that it is aerobic. That means you want to walk at a pace that leaves you feeling “warm and slightly out of breath”. One good way to start is the 5 out 5 back plan. Just walk 5 minutes away from the house and then you are force to walk 5 minutes back. Increase the time out as your health and fitness increase.

Stress Management – Most of us live with some type of stress every day. It has just become part of our lives. It has also become one reason we don’t always feel our best and why we are susceptible to feeling run down and ’sick’.

Reducing stress can help now and our long term health. Stress keeps our bodies from functioning at their best and slowly wears on us. Find way to relax, to have that ‘me’ time where the pressures of the day can be pushed aside.

Try to simplify your life. Our world has become so fast paced and ‘in your face’ – ‘do it now’ that we just don’t have time to sit and watch the clouds or the rain or…. One simple way to gain a little sanity is to disconnect from the fast pace, try just turning off the cell phone. Just leave it behind for an hour.

But, no matter how much we work on getting rid of the stresses in our life there will always be something that causes us stress. Luckily, there are ways to help us overcome the stress nutritionally.

Avoiding Toxins – With all of our advances and science and technology, man has come up with many great things to improve our quality of life. However, we are learning that some of these things that are there to improve actually produce side effects that can hurt us and our health – now and in the future.

The EPA has warned that indoor air pollution is more of a concern than the pollution we find outside. Many cleaners as well as skin and beauty products actually contain harmful toxins.

There are companies out there that do produce green cleaners that are safe for people and for the environment. Read labels and know what your beauty and cleaning products contain.

One of the best ways to maintain your health is to wash your hands. We touch so many different things with our hands things that might have been cleaned with toxins or touched by something unhealthy that by just washing, you can cut down on many unwanted health effects.

Adequate Sleep – Giving your body the sleep it requires is a great way to keep it healthy. During sleep your body regenerates and rejuvenates. It is absolutely imperative to get enough sleep, but getting more doesn’t always mean you are getting better quality sleep.

Quit Smoking – Despite the many warnings and the known health risks
smoking is still prevalent around the world. Quitting this habit can not only improve your health drastically and improve your chances of preventing future disease; it can relieve you of a financial burden. Just think if you applied all the money you spend on cigarettes on healthy nutritional supplements how much you could increase your health and wellness.

Its not always the difficult path that is required for change. Quite often making a few simple changes in our lives can make dramatic results.

Think about it!

Auras: Do They Really Exist?

Sunday, June 14th, 2009
feenx asked:

Greetings!

I am feenx

http://indigoinsight.blogspot.com

I am so excited to finally be able to publish this article, as it has been quite a bit of information gathering and there is an abundance of side roads that can be taken with this wealth of information. My hope is to stay focused on the topics mentioned above, and as the discussion expands through reader comments and questions, we can explore all those avenues.

To begin with, I’d like to set the mental mood for taking in this information. As independent Homo sapiens, we have the ability of choice. In everything we do we make a choice. For the sake of truly digesting the information in this article, I would ask that all predispositions of “reality” be put aside for a few minutes. As Albert Einstein put it, “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”

That being said, I’m not here to push any theory or statement on you. We all must look within ourselves for the ring of truth. Let’s get started!

The Aura: Existence?

In the western realm, such as the U.S., the term aura usually is associated with the new age movement. The “New Age” movement conjures up an array of assumptions from many people ranging from a new term for hippies to a politically correct term for occultists or pagans.

The actuality is that the aura is something that pre-dates the church itself. In fact, to even refer to it as a pagan term or thought would inaccurate.

Throughout quite diverse cultures, there are spiritual traditions and beliefs centered on the belief in auras, and as it is spread out all over the Earth, you will find multiple terms for it.

India had spiritual practices, dating back 5,000 years, regarding Prana which when translated from Sanskrit literally means: Vital energy or life principle. Literally, “vital air,” from the root pran, “to breathe.”

The Chinese, dating back 3,000 years called it Qi or Qigong.

The Jewish Kaballah refers to it as Astral Light.

In the 12th century Dr. Ambroise-Auguste Liébeault founder of The Nancy School said, “Humans have an energy that can react on someone else’s energy, either at a distance or close by.”

In the 19th century the German scientist Franze Mesmer redefined hypnosis, techniques which are still used today, and suggested that the “a field similar to an electromagnetic field might exist around the human body.” Later in the 19th century, Carl Reichenback referred to it as the Odic Source. His book, Physico-physiological Researches on the Dynamics of Magnetism, Electricity, Heat, Light, Crystallization, and Chemism, In Their Relation to Vital Force, printed in New York in 1851, stated that the odic force, like poles, attract similar energies. His experiments showed that electropositive elements gave his subjects feelings of warmth, and that this produced unpleasant feelings. In the reverse, electronegative elements produced cool and agreeable feelings.

Just with the above-mentioned instances there are stark contrasts in cultures, geographic location and time periods, yet they ALL have belief systems and practices based around this human energy field (HEF). Also note, that through all of these references, there is not a common source listed for this knowledge. E.g., Christianity spread with the creation of the Catholic Church and the Bible, hence Christianity as a whole spread all over the world from one source.

However, in the above examples this is not the case. The Sanskrit translations of prana had no bearing on the Kabbalah. Yet, this large number of people from all walks of life taught the same basic premise.

Hence the study and belief of auras is nothing new, in fact is far from it. That leads us to the next part of the question. If it’s not new age but instead an ancient teaching, what have modern studies been able to prove about auras?

The Aura: Modern Studies

In 1911 Walter Kilner

devised a way of seeing the HEF or aura. Looking through glass screens stained with dicyanin dye, he saw a glowing mist around the body in three distinct zones:

1. A 1/4 inch layer closest to skin;

2. A more vaporous layer, 1 inch wide, streaming perpendicularly from the body;

3. A delicate exterior luminosity with indefinite contours, about 6 inches wide.

His work was later published in New York in 1965 and entitled The Human Aura, in which he stated that this HEF varied from person to person based on their physical, emotional and mental health. With this information he was able to record commonalities he saw within people who were suffering from certain ailments and in later times was able to diagnose such health issues within people.

He successfully treated many conditions, including epilepsy, liver disease, tumors, appendicitis, and hysteria. Research based on his work continues to this day in Europe.

Perhaps the most well known researcher in this arena is Semyon Kirlian

who invented what is now known as Kirlian photography. By photographing plants, they were able to see static images, which they then applied to human fingers. Then with their own, patented, photography equipment used this technique to see the variances in the HEF, and was able to apply this and point out the differences in the HEF between healthy subjects and those harboring a disease.

By now, if you’re anything like me your head feels a little cramped right about now. Though these past studies are all important I usually like to sum them up very simply by telling myself that past studies laid the groundwork for what we now can see through the current state of our technology. Similar to the difference between cramming my head with all the details of how Henry Ford invented his horseless carriage versus jumping ahead to the current technology.

So let’s take a jump!

Aura: The Science of It

As we learned in school, there is great power in life. Plants must have sunlight in order for proper photosynthesis, which in turn helps produce the very air we are breathing right now. Light can also have a negative effect on us, such as too much UV light, which can cause numerous problems for the human body such as skin cancer.

As stated by Colourenergy.com “Our most important energy source is light, and the entire spectrum of colours is derived from light. Sunlight, which contains all the wavelengths, consists of the entire electromagnetic spectrum that we depend on to exist on this planet.

Light flows through our eyes and triggers hormone production, which influences our entire complex biochemical system. This biochemical system then affects our being. And light does not travel alone. Light travels with other energies as illustrated below.

We know that each colour found in the visible light spectrum has its own wavelength and its own frequency, which produces a specific energy and has a nutritive effect. We know some rays can be dangerous if we are exposed to them. But the visible light, the rainbow, has a soothing effect on us.”

Based on what we have covered so far there have been multiple examples of people seeing SOME kind of emanation from the human body. There are those that would argue that really doesn’t prove anything. Just because something present doesn’t mean it, there is cohesion between its existence and ours. That’s a very valid point. However even in studies conducted for a completely different purpose, there are interesting facts that clue us in the validity of auras.

Take a small journey back to 1998. The Y2K fear is spreading and a large part of the technological boom is cell phones. Now it would seem everyone is using them. Th
e question was raised whether or not this new technology could potentially harm anyone.

As report by Science Daily Dr. Gerard Hyland conducted a study on the effects of microwave radiation (such as those found in cell phones) on the human body. What did he discover as a by-product of his research?

“This summer Dr Hyland will give two papers at international conferences outlining his research into the phenomenon that biological systems, including the human body, generate and emit extremely low intensity radiation in the form of photons (a microscopic packet of light energy), and that these photon emissions are not random but display coherence.”

They display COHERENCE. Not only does the human body emit light energy, but that energy has coherence.

Let’s go a step further. ;)

Gustave Naessens, a French microbiologist who is still carrying out his research in Canada, through hematology studies has found tiny particles of dancing light present in human blood that were too small to identify. He then invented what he calls a somatascope, a microscope with a magnification of 30,000 times, and a resolution of 150 angstroms.

Through this equipment, he studied these particles, naming them the somatid, and states that without this somatid cell division can’t take place. He believes, “that the somatid is the original spark of life, the pinpoint where energy condenses into matter,” and that the “somatid represents the manifestation of cosmic energy in a tiny, moving dot of physicality,” as printed in A New Answer to Cancer in ‘Well-Being’, September/October, 1993.

What does all this us? Let’s take a quick tally of what we’ve covered. Multiple ancient cultures and belief structures have an array of writings covering the HEF. Researchers in later times developed techniques to view this HEF. Modern science with the aid of technology has learned that these light particles truly at the very fiber of humans, and that this energy has coherence.

Have scientists come right and said we all have auras? No. In addition, I surmise it will yet be some time before any of them make such a statement, if at all. Staunch evolutionists refuse to believe in a higher power, and staunch religious advocates refuse to believe in evolution. This debate will continue yet for a time.

I personally am thankful for these polar opposites, this yin and yang. The very stubborn nature of science to prove, without a doubt, in front of their own very eyes propagates the motivation for humans to re-create something they can’t explain in experiments. This attitude by far can be quite powerful. Why? Because it puts the power of humanity back in the hands of humans.

In the same vain the beliefs that religion instills in people is also helpful. Putting aside the doctrines, dogma and politics that comes with any religion, it teaches people to believe in something more than what they see in the mirror everyday. This based on a “knowing” that is felt, not scientifically proven.

Though they currently are often on different sides of the cosmic conundrum, they each serve a purpose.

My question to you is…what would happen if you could mesh the two together?

If as humans we could accept both creation AND science as part of our core being, letting the two naturally enhance the other, two poles coming together, would that not truly enhance the very essence that is this experiment we call humanity?

Our belief in something more, something we feel, something we know used as a basis and in harmony with the motivation of science to prove and re-create, in my humble opinion, would help all of us.

The possibilities truly are endless. I would invite readers to tell us what you think could be done if the two began working together. If you could use such knowledge to do ANYTHING, what would it be?

In that vein, what if I told you this had already happened? What if I told you that in fact we are a walking experiment, of the combination of science and creation, of science and spirituality?

Well my friend, then you must read the future articles. The upcoming articles on Indigo children will cover this, as well as aura colors and their meaning, and some speculation about aura details of historical figures.

Stay tuned!

Electronic Smog

Sunday, June 14th, 2009
Abhijit Banerjee asked:

Electronic smog is caused by the electricity that powers our civilization. It is an invisible smog which is linked to depression, miscarriage and cancer. Ironically electronic smog increases with advancement in technology, making more and more people allergic to electricity. This type of allergy causes nausea, pain, dizziness, depression and difficulties in sleeping and concentration among people who use electrical appliances or go near cell phone masts. Electronic smog is the continuously growing quantity of electromagnetic radiation (EMR), which, according to WHO estimates, affects up to three in every 100 people.

Mindboggling Range of Spectrum

The range of the electromagnetic spectrum is mind bogglingly vast. At one end of the scale are fields with frequencies of several seconds, and at the other frequencies of billions of times a second. The highest frequencies known are 50,000,000,000,000,000,000 Hertz (pulses per second). Scientists estimate that our daily exposure to radiation is 100 million times higher than it was in our grandparents’ time. Some people react to even very low levels of exposure, often to specific items. Our body goes through a lot of electric activity. It uses electric impulses to transmit signals between nerves. Electromagnetic interferences can seriously affect these activities. Everyday electronic items such as television, radio, and microwave, create a magnetic field around them and can affect human body. And this level of smog will only increase further with advances in technology

Disruptive to Body’s Natural Energy Fields

Scientists have shown that EMRs can be disruptive to the human body’s own natural energy fields. Their waves are not blocked or weakened by objects in their way and they enter our body and upset its cellular function and biological processes. EMR can cause headaches, tiredness and even immune system disorders. Appliances which have proximity to the human head, like electric hair dryers, shavers and bedside digital alarms, are more dangerous. This is the reason why sensitivity to a computer screen is common, as we sit near to them, but sensitivity to television sets is less common, as we are usually six or more feet away from them. The World Health Organization considers electronic smog “one of the most common and fastest growing environmental influences.” Too much electronic smog causes our body’s electric field to become unbalanced, to slow down, to darken in spots, to stagnate, resulting in sickness and premature death. According to scientists, the electrical fields given off by a wide variety of household items, including computers, televisions, cookers, lamps and even wiring, charge minuscule particles in the air such as viruses, bacteria, allergens and highly toxic pollutants. These particles are tiny. Being less than 80 times the thickness of a human hair, they are constantly airborne and we breathe them in all the time.

Effects on Children

International Agency for Research on Cancer, a segment of the WHO, has classified electronic smog as a “possible human carcinogen” and the University of New York’s School of Public Health is of the opinion that electronic smog can cause up to 30% of all childhood cancers. A study by the National Radiological Protection Board, UK, has linked electronic smog to leukemia in children. The Health Protection Agency, Britain’s top health protection watchdog, has warned against the ill effects of Wi-Fi networks on children as this system is increasingly being set up in British schools.

Cell Phone Radiation

According to a Swedish study, because of intense usage of cell phones, the present generation of teenagers runs the risk of becoming senile by middle age. A study by Finnish scientists reported 40 percent increase in the risk of developing brain tumor for those using cell phones for over ten years. They are likely to be affected on that side of the head where they hold the phone to talk. Most scientists agree that children below the age of eight should not be allowed to use a cell phone. Recent research has found a dangerous association between cell phone and a man’s ***** quality. It has been found that the more hours a man spends on his cell phone leads to lower ***** count and greater percentage of abnormal *****.

Ways to Increase Resistance to EMR Damage

Increase intake of antioxidants, melatonin, vitamins B, C, E and folic acid as these are natural oxidative stress fighters

Fish, poultry, meat and tap water are main sources of heavy metal ingestion. Find out the source of these items before consumption. Eat fresh, chemical-free, organic meats, fruits and vegetables. Test for allergic responses.

Avoid or minimize caffeine and alcoholic beverages, especially distilled liquor.

Drink carbon filtered water possibly in glass or ceramic containers. Limit water in plastic bottles. Use recycled paper products for drinking and eating; avoid plastic or Styrofoam.

Exercise increases metabolism. Breathe slowly and deeply. Surround yourself with nature as often as possible.

Replace bright and fluorescent light with subdued full-spectrum/natural incandescent bulbs or candle light as much as possible. Increase melatonin naturally by sleeping in the darkest room possible.

Get up to a couple hours of sun exposure

How To Avoid Electronic Smog

Minimize usage cell phones, cordless phones, and WiFi devices.

Do not keep cell phones near your head. Turn it off when you are not using it and keep 6-7 feet gap between yourself and any part of your body. Never use it to play games, movies, etc.

When using the cell phone wear air tube headsets

Avoid keeping cell phone in pocket, purse, back or on hip all day. Close proximity to the hip may also affect fertility because the hip produces 80% of the body’s red blood cells and is especially vulnerable to EMR damage.

Pregnant women, women with a baby/small child in arms, and those under age 16, should avoid cell phone use when in a vehicle (car, train, plane, subway) as radiation gets trapped and is higher in these closed metal zones. Cordless phone base emits high levels of EMR even when not in use. So it is advised to replace them with wired, corded lines (phones, Internet, games, appliances, devices, etc.).

Minimize use of computers use, sit as far away from the screen as possible; preferably use flat screens. Use wired Internet connections, not WiFi – especially for laptops. Keep laptops off of the body and away from metal surfaces.

Keep alarm clock away. Keep radio at least 3 feet from head or use battery power. It is recommended that you keep at least 6 feet distance from all electronic devices during sleep. Avoid waterbeds, electric blankets and metal bed frames. Futons/wood frames are better than metal-coiled mattresses and box-springs.

When using electric stoves, cook on back burners instead of front, as much as possible. Keep away from metals as they attract EMR.

Nutritional Protection Against Cellphone Radiation

Thursday, June 11th, 2009
Paul Fitzgerald asked:

As growing evidence points to the potential adverse health impact of exposure to cell phone radiation, scientists are seeking strategies to prevent or mitigate these effects.

Currently, nutritional researchers are exploring whether melatonin, vitamin C, and and vitamin E can ameliorate the detrimental effects caused by radiation emitted by cell phones.

To date, a total of eight studies have pointed to the protective effects of melatonin and vitamins C and E in stemming the damage caused by cell phone emissions. In particular, these agents show promise in averting the increased oxidative stress that is thought to contribute to an increased risk of certain cancers.

These studies have unveiled statistically significant protective effects of melatonin and vitamins C and E against the effects of the radiation frequency at which cell phones emit and receive radio frequency radiation.

Six of these eight studies were controlled, short-term studies (ranging from 10-30 days) in rodents. Each study examined 24-30 subjects. Study subjects were divided equally into three groups: one group received radiation exposure; another received active treatment with melatonin only, vitamin C only, or vitamins C and E before radiation exposure; and a control group did not receive radiation or active treatment.

After the treatment period, scientists examined skin sections for radiation injury and analyzed blood and urine for markers of oxidative stress. They found significant kidney damage, skin changes, oxidative stress, and fibrosis in the animals who received radiation exposure only. Remarkably, these effects were reversed in the groups that received melatonin 13-16 and vitamins C17,18 and E.17

Another two controlled studies in rodents, one of 10 days’19 and another of 60 days’ duration,20 revealed that melatonin significantly protects against retinal (eye)20 and kidney tissue 19 damage caused by cell phone radiation, as compared with subjects that did not receive melatonin.

Despite this compelling evidence, other avenues of research still need to be pursued after contradictory findings from seven different studies that have looked into the effect of cell phone radiation on melatonin levels in the body increased cell phone use and decreasing melatonin levels in the blood.21

Yet six other studies–two in humans22,23 and four in rodents24-27– found that melatonin levels remained unchanged after radiation exposure. One human study did suggest that cell phone radiation may impact melatonin onset time. These were small studies, however, the majority of which were less than 28 days’ duration.

Melatonin is a vital natural neurohormone (hormone secreted by or acting on a part of the nervous system) that acts as a potent free radical scavenger and antioxidant. Melatonin regulates the daily circadian rhythm and is essential to self-repair and regeneration.

Given melatonin’s protective effects, these findings warrant further research into the effect of cell phone radiation on melatonin in larger, longer-term, well-controlled human studies.
